Sea Moss Guide

What Is Sea Moss?

Sea moss, also known as Irish moss, is a type of red sea algae that grows along Atlantic and Caribbean coastlines. For generations, it has been used as a natural source of nourishment and wellness support.

Sea moss is one of nature's most mineral-rich ocean plants, traditionally used to support gut health, energy, skin, hormones, and overall balance. At Āio Sea Moss, we use wildcrafted Purple and Gold sea moss from St Lucia, prepared fresh weekly in Aotearoa using simple ingredients: sea moss, spring water, and fresh lime.

Purple Sea Moss

Purple sea moss is naturally darker due to its higher antioxidant content. It has a richer mineral profile and a deeper, more earthy taste, often chosen by those wanting a stronger, more concentrated option. Raw purple sea moss naturally contains iodine, magnesium, potassium, polyphenols, and antioxidant compounds.

Gold Sea Moss

Gold sea moss has a lighter colour, smoother texture, and milder taste. Its gentler mineral profile makes it a great starting option for those new to sea moss or looking for a lighter daily blend. Raw gold sea moss naturally contains iodine, magnesium, potassium, and natural fibres.

Purple vs Gold

Both Purple and Gold sea moss contain naturally occurring minerals and are suitable for daily use. The main difference comes down to taste, texture, and intensity. Purple is richer, deeper, and more robust, while Gold is lighter, smoother, and more subtle. Choosing between them simply comes down to your body, your preference, and the experience you're looking for.

Why Sea Moss?

Sea moss is naturally rich in minerals your body uses every day to function and stay balanced. Many people incorporate sea moss into their routine to support digestion, gut health, energy, vitality, immune function, skin health, and overall mineral intake. Sea moss is not a quick fix — it works best when taken consistently as part of a balanced lifestyle.

How We Make Our Sea Moss Gels?

Every batch of Āio Sea Moss Gel is prepared fresh weekly in Aotearoa. We begin with wildcrafted sea moss from St Lucia, carefully soaking and rinsing it before lightly infusing it with fresh lime and blending it into a smooth gel consistency. Just sea moss, spring water, and lime. No preservatives. No additives.

How to Use

Take 1–2 tablespoons daily. Add it to smoothies, juices, warm herbal teas, porridge, breakfast bowls, soups, or enjoy it straight from the jar. Some people also use sea moss topically as a simple hydrating face mask.

Storage & Care

Sea moss gel is a fresh, perishable product. To maintain quality, keep refrigerated at 1–5°C, use a clean dry spoon, avoid introducing water into the jar, and consume within 21 days. Do not freeze.
